James Alvin Carpenter, Sr., passed away on June 8, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 85. Born on June 16, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio, Jim’s life was one marked by hard work, dedication to family, and a resolute love for the land he called home.
Jim spent his early years in Columbus, Ohio, where he was raised with the values of integrity, determination, and community spirit. As a young adult, he made the important decision to move west to Tucson, Arizona—a place that would ultimately become the heart of his life’s work and adventure.
Shortly after settling in Tucson, Jim married Nancy Dyer in September of 1960, beginning a devoted partnership that would span decades. Together, they built a life rooted in love, resilience, and shared dreams. Jim and Nancy were blessed with a large and loving family, and the warmth and guidance Jim provided as a husband and father will long be cherished.
Jim’s professional journey epitomized his talent and entrepreneurial spirit. Drawing upon skills honed in construction, drafting, and engineering, he established a successful custom home building business. Thanks to his vision and expertise, nearly 100 families in Tucson found their homes in houses shaped by his hands and heart. Jim was a craftsman who took pride in every detail of his work, and his legacy can quite literally be seen across Tucson’s neighborhoods.
Beyond his career, Jim's life was rich with passions and service. An avid outdoorsman, he found special joy in the landscapes of Southern Arizona, pursuing both hunting and hiking with enthusiasm. He volunteered for Search & Rescue, sharing his knowledge and ensuring the safety of others who shared his love for Arizona’s wilderness. Jim’s deep respect for wildlife showed through his support for AZ Game & Fish, a cause to which he regularly contributed.
Family was always at the center of Jim’s world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Carpenter, and his children: Mary Lou, Kemberly, James Jr., and Robert. He is also survived by several sons- and daughters-in-law, Steve, Albert, Sandy, and Mike. Jim’s legacy lives on in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose lives are a testament to his love and guidance. He is also survived by, James Alvin, Patricia L. Winne, Sandra L. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Eugene Carpenter and mother, Virginia Carpenter.

His love of camping with his sons, his readiness to help when needed, and his unwavering commitment to family and community will never be forgotten.
