James “Jim” W. Phillips, 88, passed away May 25, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. He was born on September 17, 1937, in Albany, Georgia to Mabry Stone Phillips and Carolyn Smith Phillips.

After graduating from Albany High School in 1955, Jim received one bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and another in industrial management from Auburn University.

Jim later joined National Semiconductor, working internationally in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. His career reflected both his talent and adventurous spirit, allowing him to build friendships and leave lasting impressions across many countries and cultures.

After retiring to Tucson, Arizona in 1985, Jim’s passion for his work and international life took him back to Bangkok where he spent eight years working for AMD before retiring permanently to Tucson in 1994.

Throughout his life, Jim was beloved for his warmth, intelligence, kindness, and sense of humor. He enjoyed eating all his meals out, and there was no one more beloved by the wait staff of Tucson. Jim had a great sense of humor, and he knew it. He was known to laugh harder than anyone else at his own jokes, and he was legendary for his generosity to all. He was a member of Catalina Foothills Church.

Jim is survived by his brothers, Bubba (Gay) Phillips and Carlos (Sheila) Phillips; his nephew, Trip (Karen) Phillips; and his niece, Carolyn Phillips.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Herb and Diane Wehlener, Pete and Leslie Wells, and George Babich for their loving and tender care throughout Jim’s last days in the absence of family. Your generosity and presence brought great comfort and will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Gospel Rescue Mission, 4550 S. Palo Verde Road, Tucson, AZ 85714 or to the charity of your choice.
